From first sale to full scale: How our 8-figure brand approaches paid and organic marketing
Hey everyone, David Gaylord here. Last week, we covered my test-and-learn approach to product development. Now, let's tackle one of the most exciting (and challenging) aspects of starting up: making your first sale. Onwards to Episode 3, all about marketing.
Marketing connects customers to your product. Figuring out how to send the right message, to the right person, at the right place, at the right time is fun and rewarding work.
But marketing is also the single biggest hurdle for most small businesses. Marketing is hard. My first paid advertisement was a complete dud. I also struggled to position Bushbalm's products in the early days. And there were many cases where a "winning" campaign ended up fizzling out—the clicks just wouldn't turn into customers.
Slowly, however, we started getting traction. Content and SEO worked. Influencer campaigns were wildly successful, too. Eventually, our paid spend became more efficient and effective. And some of our very best marketing actually came from our own customers.
