The product development process we used to build our 8-figure skincare company. Hey everyone, it's David Gaylord again. Last week, I shared how I started my business, Bushbalm, while working my full-time job here at Shopify. Now that Bushbalm is on track to drive $10-12M in revenue this year, I'm releasing a series with Shopify on how I got started. Welcome to Episode 2, all about product development. At Shopify, we say that failure is the successful discovery of something that didn’t work. And that's especially relevant to product development. For most of you, finding and developing your product will likely be the hardest step. When most of us think of finding a product, we picture a single eureka moment; a genius idea that determines the fate of the business. But in my experience, creating a flagship product is far less… cinematic. The idea for Bushbalm came from my co-founder's honeymoon trip, where he discovered that beard oil might have other applications. That led us to ask more questions. We started wondering, "What about skincare for everywhere?" This led us into our journey of formulation, testing, manufacturing, and growing our retail partnerships. That's what I'm covering today: everything I experienced developing our products and expanding our product lines. I'm confident this episode will help lower the learning curve and help more entrepreneurs find ways to make and manufacture their products—and then do it at scale. | | |
